If you’re planning your first cruise, there are a few things you should know before you set sail. From the ship’s size and variety of activities, to surcharges and voyage length, here are 10 things that might surprise you on your first cruise.
1. The size of some cruise ships
Many people are amazed at the size of modern cruise ships. Cruise ships are the size of small cities, with multiple decks, pools, restaurants and entertainment facilities.

2. Various activities
Cruises offer a wide range of activities, from water sports and fitness classes to cooking demonstrations and Broadway-style shows. I have always said that cruise ships are like Vegas on water because there is something for everyone.
3. Additional cruise costs
While the cost of the cruise itself may seem reasonable, additional costs such as alcohol, special meals and excursions are often added quickly. Please give me. It is very likely that you will have doubled, or even tripled, by the end of checkout. Still, cruising is far more rewarding and far more cost-effective than staying at a hotel or resort.
4. Cruise length
Some cruises are very long, lasting several weeks or more, so it’s important to be prepared for commitments. Personally he likes 7 night cruises, but sometimes it’s too long. If you’re new to cruisers, try one of the shorter itineraries to see how it feels.

5. Dress code
Most cruise lines have formal nights and passengers are expected to dress up, so a suit or gown is recommended. Many cruise lines are a little more relaxed with their official nighttime rules, which really confuses old-school cruisers.
6. Cabin size
Cruise ship cabins vary in size, but are generally smaller than hotel rooms, so having a more compact living space is important. For a great example of what the new cabins will look like, see my post featuring the various Icon of the Seas suites and staterooms.

7. Cruise food quality
From casual buffet meals to gourmet dinners in formal dining rooms, many are amazed at the quality and variety of cruise ship dining.

8. Passenger Demographics
Cruises cater to a wide range of guests, from families with young children to retired couples, so it’s important to be able to accommodate a diverse group of travelers. Not to mention people flying in from all over the world to experience unique itineraries far from home.
9. WiFi Availability
Most modern cruise ships offer WiFi, but it varies in quality and speed, and can be expensive to use. Many cruise lines are switching to Starlink, which offers blazingly fast speeds. My most recent experience with Celebrity Beyond was that the Wi-Fi speeds were fast throughout the cruise, making it much easier to work with than on previous cruises.
10. Harbor stops
Many cruises stop at multiple ports, allowing passengers to explore different destinations and experience different cultures. However, it’s important to note that these stops may be short. That’s why it’s important to plan ahead and make the most of your time. We recommend taking advantage of the excursions offered by the cruise while in port.
These are just a few of the things that may surprise you on your first cruise. With a little preparation and an open mind, enjoy a fun and memorable voyage. Whether for relaxation or adventure, cruise ships have something for everyone. Start planning your dream vacation now!
