The Elite Unit is a program specifically designed for people with intellectual disabilities.
Chesapeake, Virginia — Members of the Chesapeake Sheriff’s Department Elite Unit enjoyed a fun day on the water with the help of Virginia Beach Adaptive Watersports.
Major David Rosado of the Chesapeake Sheriff’s Office said it was about creating a unique experience for people with intellectual disabilities.
“This is the fourth year we’ve done this,” Rosado said.
The event was held at Oak Grove Lake Park in Chesapeake.
Elite Unit member Caitlin Dykes is a fan of water skiing.
“I loved it! I had a great time. Waved my hands in the air and just exploded.” Dykes said. I also like meeting people.”
Rosado said their elite units play a large role in the department’s day-to-day operations.
The unit provides people with intellectual disabilities the opportunity to experience the different duties of a law enforcement officer. He said they graduated from a modified sheriff’s academy.
“They graduate, get their uniforms, get certified as agents of our elite units. educate the
Virginia Beach Adaptive Watersports worked with the Sheriff’s Department to provide specially designed equipment to help members of the elite unit enjoy the water safely.
Rosado said this is a way for Sheriff’s Department leaders to give back and connect with elite units.
“It’s an opportunity to not have to go to sea,” Rosado said.
The event was completely free and allowed for sit-down water skiing, tubing and boat rides.
