TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — Florida law enforcement leaders say five former Memphis police officers charged in Tyre Nichols’ death after bodycam video of his beating was released on Friday. expressed fear at the actions of
The video was released the day after the officer was charged with the murder of a 29-year-old.
In the video, Nichols is seen being violently dragged out of the car by police officers while saying he did nothing.
“You guys are doing so many things right now,” Nichols said. “I am about to go home.”
The video then showed the officers beat and cursed Nichols for three minutes while he was screaming. At one point, Nichols even cried out for his mother.
“I will kick you out with the baton,” said one policeman.
Memphis officials identified the officers as Tadarius Bean, Demetrius Haley, Desmond Mills Jr., Emmitt Martin III, and Justin Smith. Police say other officers are also being investigated for their involvement in Nichols’ arrest.
Following the release of the video, several law enforcement leaders here in Florida condemned the actions of the five officers.
Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Gualtieri called the officers’ behavior appalling.
“What I saw in these videos was not law enforcement. It was beatings on the street,” Gualtieri said. “I strongly condemn the actions of law enforcement leaders across the country. There is no justification for it and they must all be held accountable.”
Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood, who has worked in law enforcement for 35 years, said he had never seen anything so reprehensible and “made me want to throw up.”
“I am so sorry to all who were outraged by the video, especially the grieving family, that these officers have betrayed not only their oath but their humanity,” Chitwood said. “The Nicholls family are sending out my prayers tonight even though I know nothing will ease or lessen the pain they are feeling.”
Northport Police Chief Todd Garrison also condemned Nichols’ death as “beyond disturbing.”
“It breaks my heart to see this story unfold,” said Garrison. “My deepest condolences to him and his family. We all condemn these actions.”
President Joe Biden has also spoken out against police brutality, especially “black and brown Americans”, and called for a fairer legal system. But he also called on protesters to keep the peace despite their outrage.
“Those who seek justice … should not resort to violence and destruction,” Biden said. “Violence is never acceptable. It is illegal and destructive. I join Mr. Nichols’ family in calling for peaceful protest.”
