Hopmonk Sonoma brings surfer girl Madeleine King next Sunday to perform to the brunch crowd on February 5th.
“Surfing is just one of the craziest water sports I do. When I’m not playing music, I’m in the water most of the time,” King says as he dangles his hair into a towel while talking on the phone. He wiped it with a cloth and said,
Once King settled in at home, she played both 6- and 12-string guitars. She pulls her tunes out of a very comfortable and well-worn hat.
“I’ve been doing music forever,” said the Farifax resident. “I’m a singer-songwriter. I play guitar and mandolin and sing. We literally just named it Maddie and the Mayor. Two of her three, it turns out, have been mayors in my town for the past few years. And the other is the self-proclaimed mayor of the neighboring town.”
So, in addition to her solo gigs, King plays in bands.
Also showing her versatility in the water, she has taken up “a fun and crazy new sport called wing foiling,” King said.
Like the elegant giant yachts of the America’s Cup series, her board has ‘wings’ that allow it to float above the water and glide almost frictionlessly. The wing also allows her board and yacht to reach “crazy” speeds, she said, with the board King uses ranging from 10 knots to her 35 knots, depending on the rig’s equipment. can move at a speed of
Whether solo or with a band, when dry ashore, King plays music she says is in the Americana genre. The Americana moniker has been abused in music lately, but King explained that he takes inspiration from the likes of John Prine, Sean Colvin and The Band. Then throw in Joni Mitchell and The Beatles, two of her other musical acts that King mentioned, and the waters of Americana get muddy.
In addition to these Monster OG influencer songs, Kings will be performing her own songs. Stylistically, she considers herself a bluesy, folky, and come on… Americana blues musician.
King will perform at HopMonk on Sunday, February 5th at 12:30pm.
There are no National Football League games scheduled that Sunday. Put on your wetsuit and head out to see King at the HopMonk. When she’s done, she’ll meet you in the lineup, just ahead of the surf break.
