Florida State head coach Mike Nobel found himself in somewhat unfamiliar territory during his tenure with the Seminoles. He is seeking a replacement assistant coach after the Arkansas Razorbacks hired defensive backs coach Marcus Woodson.
Nobel has only held the position three times at Tallahassee and had to quickly replace TJ Rushing, who he originally hired as DB coach, when he was poached by Jimbo Fisher’s Texas A&M Aggies. . That vacancy was filled by Woodson.
When Kenny Dillingham stepped down to become Oregon’s offensive coordinator last season, Nobel filled the vacancy by promoting Alex Atkins to offensive coordinator and Tony Tokers to quarterback coach. Additionally, linebacker coach Chris Marve left to become Virginia Tech’s defensive coordinator, and Randy Shannon was promoted from his off-field analyst role.
In all these cases, Novell promoted from within or relied on direct staffing from the past.
Will he repeat that route, or will this become a true national survey?

defensive back coach hot board
- Azar Abdul RahimAssociate Head Coach/DB Coach/Defensive Passing Game Coordinator, Boston College Eagles
Why Abdul-Rahim could be the next FSU defensive back coach?
NT&T: I’ve been playing this drum for almost as long as Jajuan Seider when it comes to assistant coaches I’d like to see at FSU. “AAR” said he is 46 and studied under Nick Saban in Alabama and Mike Coxley in Maryland, so he knows how to recruit effectively. He’s also a proven developer, as his defensive back at his college in Boston has consistently outperformed his prep rankings.
Why isn’t Abdul-Rahim the next FSU defensive back coach?
Tim: Couldn’t find any connection between current Florida state official and Abdul Rahim right now. Will Norvell branch out and connect with an unfamiliar coach?
Why could Taurean Gray be FSU’s next defensive back coach?
NT&T: Gray, 48, has more than 20 years of professional experience coaching defensive backs at Virginia Tech, Florida and South Carolina with the Chicago Bears and Washington Redskins. A native of Lakeland, Florida, he is a talented recruiter with deep ties to the Sunshine State and has developed more than a dozen NFL defensive backs.
Why won’t Taurean Gray be FSU’s next defensive back coach?
Tim: As with Abdul-Rahim, there’s no immediately noticeable crossover between Gray and Norvell or his staff. If Nobel works as it used to, Gray doesn’t fit. Additionally, Gamecock has seen improvement in the secondary, while Gray was previously let go after his unit was consistently set on fire in Florida.
Why Chip West could be the next FSU defensive back coach?
Tim: When the season opener was announced, my first thought was who among FSU’s opponents displayed a strong defensive backfield? did. They have two big names in the portal the team is pursuing (safety Ja’Had Carter and cornerback Duce Chestnut), and Garrett Williams is considered one of the top cornerbacks in the ACC before his injury. In his first two seasons at Syracuse, West gave all his starters (in corners) All-ACC honors. While in Virginia, he was named 247 Sports ACC’s Recruiter of the Year in 2011. Do you have a relationship with FSU? Yes, I shared time with current FSU Attack Coordinator Alex Atkins in Charlotte in 2018.
Why isn’t Chip West the next FSU defensive back coach?
JP: Because Norvell watched the Seminole wideout stiff arm west corner all the way to Ishika earlier this season.
- TJ RushingDB Coach, Texas A&M
Why could TJ Rushing be the next FSU defensive back coach?
JP: Norvell liked him so much from their time together in Memphis that he hired him as his first staff member before Jimbo Fisher snatched him up. Rushing says he may want to work for Nobel again after experiencing a toxic culture at College Station.
Why isn’t TJ Rushing the next FSU defensive back coach?
NT&T: At Texas A&M, Rushing is close to his hometown of Oklahoma and participates in top-level competition in the SEC. His best recruit hits come from Texas and Oklahoma, and he definitely has some serious cash at his disposal on the trail.
Why could Mike Treyer be the next FSU defensive back coach?
NT&T: Familiarity of the past. Treier spent several weeks on Mike Norvell’s first FSU staff before going to Colorado and eventually he went to Giants. He overlapped with current FSU defensive coordinator Adam Fuller in Marshalls, with Fuller coordinating defense and coaching safety, and Treyer coaching corners in 2018.
Why isn’t Mike Treyer the next FSU defensive back coach?
JP: Norvell probably wants to hire a coach sooner or later, and with Treier working in the NFL and Giants in the playoff mix, that’s not feasible.
Why could DeMarcus Van Dijk be the next FSU defensive back coach?
Tim: The DVD was played under Randy Shannon in Miami and was due to be recruited in South Florida.
Why isn’t DeMarcus Van Dijk the next FSU defensive back coach?
JP: Can I apply for the DVD? no doubt. But can FSU strike a balance between experienced teachers and field recruiters? absolutely.
- Greg MossAnalyst, Florida. corey fullerDirector of Football Relations, Florida. Kaywan RatliffFlorida, Director of Player Relations
Why could an FSU assistant staff be the next FSU defensive back coach?
Tim: It’s no secret that Norvell likes to hire from within. Readers need only turn to the last Florida state vacancy where he promoted Tony Tokers to quarterback coach. Moss has secondary education experience at Charleston Southern and his FIU. Ratliff worked with his back defensively at the Miami Dolphins. Fuller coached cornerbacks at FAMU.
Why isn’t an FSU assistant staffer the next FSU defensive back coach?
JP: These guys aren’t ready for prime time (at least in this role).
Travis FisherDB Coaches, Nebraska Cornhuskers
Why Travis Fisher could be the next FSU defensive back coach?
Tim: The Fishers are from Tallahassee (Godby) and played college ball in the states. In Nebraska, his defensive force has shown consistent progress under his command.
Why isn’t Travis Fisher the next FSU defensive back coach?
NT&T: Simply put, he has a bigger, more established name ahead of him and he has nothing to do with Norvell or his staff. In his time at UCF and Nebraska, he did not overlap with the current Seminole coach, and Randy left Orlando shortly before Shannon arrived as his DC.
- Terrell BuckleyHead Coach, XFL Orlando Guardians. Antonio CromartieAnalyst, Texas A&M
Why Terrell Buckley/Antonio Cromartie could be FSU’s next defensive back coach?
JP: Both T-Buck and Cro were leading stars on the FSU field. No, it’s okay.
Why isn’t Terrell Buckley/Antonio Cromartie the next FSU defensive back coach?
NT&T: We know many FSU devotees are clamoring for one of the school’s all-time greats to return and coach their defensive back. But Terrell Buckley was recently hired into his first head coaching position to replenish the staff. is unlikely to be the guy in Maybe another day, Seminole fans. What about Cromartie? Maybe as an analyst, but you shouldn’t be a serious candidate for position coach at this point.
