Lifeguards across the state battled it out on the sand and in the surf at the Toyota California Surf Life Saving Championships at Huntington State Beach on Saturday, July 24th.
Offering bragging rights for nearly 30 years, the competition sees lifeguards compete in popular events such as runs, swims, paddleboards and dolly boat races.
Activities kicked off on Friday, July 23rd with a Junior Lifeguard competition that brought together about 500 young people from 25 beaches. About 100 experienced lifeguards competed from up and down the coast on Saturday.
The annual championship was canceled last year due to the coronavirus pandemic.This year, Carpinteria officials who were preparing to host the event decided to cancel due to ongoing pandemic concerns. The state park offered to host the contestants in Huntington Beach.
