Here are some creative ways to deal with the rising cost of living. Originally from San Diego, his 28-year-old Austin Wells is a residential cruise ship with lifestyle his amenities such as a spa, workspace his lounge, gym, indoor/outdoor golf, and a sea level marina. I bought an apartment for MV Narrative. To enjoy boating and water sports.
How could someone so young afford this? For Wells, it’s simple. He found that living full-time on board was actually more affordable than paying rent in Southern California, as an onboard apartment and meals and amenities cost $50,000 a year.
Wells works remotely for Meta full-time, so he’s not responsible for telling anyone about his whereabouts. As long as he works, he can be in any port in the world and his employer has no problem with that.
This also suits Wells, who loves to travel, but doesn’t like how unsettling it can be in a person’s daily life. On board, you can travel slowly from port to port without taking a long flight or dealing with jet lag.
The ship is designed for long stays and therefore has a medical staff on board. So if Wells or any other passenger needs an inspection or has a problem, they will be compensated.
MV Narrative has about 500 suites and carries about 1,000 people. There are plenty of common areas on board, such as lounges, decks and libraries, to ensure that passengers have plenty of time to socialize.
Mr. Wells will keep his working hours on Pacific Standard Time. So while he is traveling in Europe, he will be on duty in the afternoons and evenings. However, he sees this as an opportunity to spend daytime hours exploring exciting ports of call.
Those who travel remotely while on the job (often called digital nomads) can be accused of blowing up the economies of low-income countries. Wells doesn’t stay in vacation rentals, so living full-time on a cruise ship alleviates this problem.
In return, he and his fellow passengers contribute to the local economy by buying the supplies they need to live on board.
Wells’ floating apartments are just 250 square feet and include a rollaway bed, pantry, desk and shower room. Meals are provided, but a private kitchen is available if you wish to prepare your own meals.
The ship is expected to be completed in 2025 and set sail with Wells and other residents owning apartments.
