orlando, florida – Orlando has seen protesters on the streets after George Floyd’s death in 2020. In response to the city’s protests, Orlando’s mayor and police chief announced a community trust and fairness initiative. Bishop Kelvin Covallis of Orlando has been involved in that work.
“I commend you for responding so positively to George Floyd’s protests and for confirming that many changes have been made in the department related to policy,” he said.
The Task Force has brought about some changes in local law enforcement policy. Orlando Police have banned chokeholds and no-knock warrants. They form “neighborhood patrols” and aim to connect with as many people as possible in diverse teams.
Police have also hired mental health professionals to attend to those in crisis where appropriate. They started a law enforcement preparatory course at a local high school.

After the death of George Floyd, the city of Orlando also hired its first equity officer. Its job is to ensure that city services are fair, equal and accessible to all. Kovaris said it was encouraging.
“They don’t want to think they have all the answers. They want to hear from the community about what they can do so they can work together to reduce what they see in Memphis, Tennessee.” I am thinking.”
Despite local progress, Kovalis said Tyre Nichols’ death shows that America has a lot of work to do to achieve social justice.
“It is clear from these actions that there is still a long way to go, as there are still people who feel their badges and powers can be abused.”
