Efforts to legalize recreational marijuana use in Florida may fall to voters.
However, in order for this topic to participate in the 2024 ballot, an online petition must have a certain number of signatures.
According to the Florida Division of Elections website, that number is 891,589. The petition now has 148,418 signatures.
Led by the Safe and Smart Florida Political Commission.
This is called “personal use of marijuana by adults” and allows anyone over the age of 21 to own or purchase marijuana products and accessories for non-medical reasons.
Recreational marijuana use is legal in 18 states.
Gov. Ron DeSantis, who vowed to begin his second term on Tuesday, didn’t speak on the issue, but it’s something he’s worked on in the past.
Last year, he said he wasn’t interested in the “pungent odors” the plants emit in Florida.
Medical marijuana has been available in Florida since 2016, a move made possible by a voter-approved constitutional amendment.
Trulieve, the state’s largest medical marijuana company, has pledged $15 million to an initiative to legalize recreational marijuana use.
